Acoustic Hot Tuna Plays Penn’s Peak Fri April 28, 2023

Acoustic Hot Tuna Plays Penn’s Peak Fri April 28, 2023

Hot Tuna, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, perform with a well-honed and solid power – always in the groove from their years of experience and mutual inspiration.

Started as a side project during Jefferson Airplane days, the constant, the very definition of Hot Tuna, has always been Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. The two boyhood pals have never wavered in one of the most enduring friendships in Rock history.

no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady

From their days playing together as teenagers in the Washington, DC area, through years of inventive Psychodelic rock in San Francisco (1996 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees), to their current acoustic and electric blues sound, no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the founders and continuing core members of Hot Tuna.

At the 2016 Grammys, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Jorma Kaukonen is a force in American music,

equally adept at fingerpicked acoustic folk and blues as he is at wailing on an electric.”

– Acoustic Guitar

Guitarist and vocalist, Jorma Kaukonen is a highly respected interpreter of roots music, blues, Americana, and popular rock-and-roll.  Jorma’s repertoire goes far beyond psychedelic rock; he is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in music. Jorma tours the world bringing his unique styling to old blues while writing new songs of weight and dimension.

Jack Casady is virtually unparalleled

–and yet he has one of the most truly unique electric-bass voices in rock…

he can melt into a supportive role but when opportunity knocks, he bursts forth with creative lines–both simple and ornate–that are unlike any you’ve heard”

Premier Guitar

One of the most unique innovators in the sixty-year history of the bass guitar, Jack Casady made his sweeping melodic mark helping to create the “San Francisco Sound” with legendary rock group Jefferson Airplane. Jack went on to track with Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Warren Zevon, members of the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, and Gov’t Mule. Casady, regarded as one of rock’s greatest bassists, is certainly one of its most original.

The Disco Biscuits Bring ‘trancefusion’ Dance Party to Penn’s Peak January 20 – 21 2023

The Disco Biscuits Bring their ‘trancefusion’ dance party to Penn’s Peak January 20 – 21 2023

The Disco Biscuits are an entirely different band today than they were when they first broke out of Philadelphia in the mid-90s.

That’s not to say that they’ve abandoned their foundation, switched gears or set sail for distant shores.

The Disco Biscuits are still very much the pioneers of “trancefusion,” bridging the gap between electronic music and jam bands.

They still remain rock pioneers whose soul belongs as much to marathon dance parties as it does to live improvisational journeys. They still employ emerging technologies to help them create music that is 100 percent human although, perhaps, not entirely of this earth.

Tickets on sale Friday, November 18th at 12:00PM at all Ticketmaster outlets, the Penn’s Peak Box Office and Roadies Restaurant and Bar.  Penn’s Peak Box Office and Roadies Restaurant ticket sales are walk-up only, no phone orders.

Youell’s Oyster House is the Lehigh Valley’s Answer to ‘Sea to Table’ Seafood

Youell’s Oyster House is the Lehigh Valley’s answer to seafood.

Youell’s Oyster House is hidden in a cozy neighborhood of Allentown, PA within minutes of the Allentown Fairgrounds, Muhlenberg College and Cedar Crest College.  About twenty minutes from the PPL center.

Youell’s Oyster House has History

Part of Pennsylvania history, originally opened in 1895. Then Gus Filipos, a longtime patron of Youell’s, bought the business in 1984 and his son Chris joined in 1987.

Youells-Oyster-house

Over the years they earned a reputation for excellent food.  Their oysters, their Certified Black Angus beef. Their wine and craft beer selections.

And very fresh seafood.

According to their website the scallops (and presumably most of their seafood) is caught less than 12 hours before being served on your plate.

Pretty good.

The motto they repeat throughout their website is:

“Upscale dining

in a relaxed atmosphere.”

I was told a few times during a recent East Coast visit, that Youell’s has the best seafood in the Lehigh Valley, so I planned to try them out.

Let’s Taste Youell’s

I arrive on a Saturday mid-afternoon, take a seat at their half full bar and proceed to order an Old Fashioned, Caesar Salad and Salmon Tartare.

Youellls Oyster House Caesar salad

Youells Oyster House Caesar salad

Cuisine

Are the ingredients fresh? Is your dish well-plated?

The cuisine is excellent.  Crisp lettuce in the salad.  Fresh, creamy salmon tartare.  The plating is inventive and inspiring.  I can close my eyes later and still happily taste it all.

Youells Oyster House Salmon Tartare

Youells Oyster House Salmon Tartare

Youell’s Ambience

The setting is comfortably disarming.  The phrase they use is “Upscale dining in a relaxed atmosphere’ and they accomplish this goal.

Open floorplan, lovingly re-built after a devastating fire, pastel and light wood.  Lots of outside light shining in.

Youells Oyster Bar

Youells Oyster Bar

Not necessarily “romantic”, but more “homey”.  Not really a first date kind of place, nor a “Saturday night” kind of place.

I am a bit surprised the customers ranged older (55+) considering the location is so close to colleges and other younger spots.

Service

As mentioned, it’s a Saturday afternoon and I am surprised by how busy it is.  Feels like neighbors and regulars.  Nobody seems “in a rush.”

My bartender is friendly and pleasant, but she keeps busy.  The service is as relaxed as the vibe itself.  Some prefer that, some would like a bit more attention.

youell-oyster-house-lehigh-valley-seafood

Hospitality

Does the restaurant deliver on the promise it makes to their customers?

If you’re looking for comfort and excellent food, this is a great place to try.  Not “impressive” or romantic, but down home quality.

I’d go back again on a Friday or Saturday night to see if the vibe does evolve for a more sexy, date night feel.  But my guess is, it doesn’t and that’s the way the restaurant and its usual crowd likes it.

Youell’s Oyster House has excellent seafood in the Lehigh Valley, but their relaxed ambience might leave some of their customers wanting more of an experience.

Little Feat: Boogie Your Spring Away Tour w/ Special Guest Miko Marks at Penn’s Peak April 23

Penn’s Peak is proud to announce Little Feat- Boogie Your Spring Away Tour w/ Special Guest Miko Marks , Sunday, April 23

Little Feat is the classic example of a fusion of many styles and musical genres made into something utterly distinctive.

Their brilliant  musicianship transcends boundaries, uniting California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, rockabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie into a rich gumbo, that has been leading people in joyful dance ever since.

Little Feat’s Lowell George connected with Bill Payne

It began in 1969 when Frank Zappa was smart enough to fire Lowell George from the Mothers of Invention and tell him to go start a band of his own.  Soon after, Lowell connected with Bill Payne, which stirred up sparks.  They then found drummer Richie Hayward.

Penn’s Peak is proud to announce Little Feat- Boogie Your Spring Away Tour w/ Special Guest Miko Marks , Sunday, April 23

Penn’s Peak is proud to announce Little Feat- Boogie Your Spring Away Tour w/ Special Guest Miko Marks , Sunday, April 23

They were quickly signed by Warner Bros. and began working on the first of twelve albums with that venerable company.

Little Feat’s first album featured the instant-classic tune Willin’

The first album, Little Feat, featured the instant-classic tune “Willin’,” and the follow-up Sailin’ Shoes added “Easy to Slip,” “Trouble,” “Tripe Face Boogie,” “Cold Cold Cold” and the title track to their repertoire.

Paul Barrére, Kenny Gradney (bass), and Sam Clayton (percussion), joined up, and the latter two remain rock-solid members of Little Feat’s rhythm section.

1973’s Dixie Chicken gave them the title track and “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” as good a blues as any rock band has ever written.  Their career to that point was summed up with the live Waiting for Columbus, truly one of the best live albums rock has ever heard.

Fifty years on the road cost them Lowell George, then Richie Hayward and Paul Barrére, but the music has carried them forward. When you spend your life on the road you can get eaten up by the stresses, or you can hold on to your music and your friends and the joy of the people out front and keep the priorities straight the way the Featsters have.

Little Feat in 2021 is…

Little Feat in 2021 is:  Bill Payne, Keyboards and Vocals; Sam Clayton, Percussion and Vocals; Fred Tackett, Guitars and Vocals, Kenny Gradney, Bass; Scott Sharrard, Guitars and Vocals; and Tony Leone, drums.

Fifty years on, they’ve been up and they’ve been down and they know where they belong—standing or sitting behind their instruments, playing for you.  And anything’s possible, because the end is not in sight.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy ‘Bring their Swing’ at Penn’s Peak Friday March 24, 2023

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy marks the 29th anniversary performing at Penn’s Peak Friday March 24, 2023

April, 2022, marks the 29th anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene.

Since its formation in the early nineties in Ventura, California, the band has toured virtually nonstop, performing on average over 150 shows a year, and has produced a sizable catalog of recorded music, with sales of over 2 million albums to date.

Early on, during their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles, they reminded the world, in the midst of the grunge era no less, that it was still cool to swing.

The band, co-founded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren, was at the forefront of the swing revival of that time, blending a vibrant fusion of the classic American sounds of jazz, swing, and dixieland, with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s all original core line-up

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s all original core line-up includes Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals), Glen “The Kid” Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet) and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger).

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s efforts to promote and revitalize swing music have taken shape as much more than a simple tribute. Taking inspiration from the creators of this uniquely American art form, the band’s original horn-infused music and legendary high energy show introduces the genre to a new and younger generation while remaining cognizant and respectful of the music’s rich legacy.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s first phase of stardom

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s first phase of stardom featured an appearance in the 1996 indie film Swingers, a movie that not only launched the careers of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, but introduced Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to an audience beyond their Los Angeles base.

The band’s music has appeared in countless films and television shows, including The Wild, Despicable Me, Phineas & Ferb, Friends, Third Rock From The Sun, Ally McBeal, and So You Think You Can Dance. They have appeared live on Dancing With The Stars, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, NBC’s Christmas in Rockefeller Center, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a remarkable seven appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show.

The band has also appeared as special guests with many of the country’s most distinguished symphony orchestras, and has performed for three U.S. Presidents.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is not slowing down

After 29 years, 11 records, over 3000 live shows, and countless appearances in film and television, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is showing no signs of slowing down, and is looking forward to sharing its music with new and old fans alike, in 2022.
